July 13, 2017
SAN DIEGO, CA–Award-winning documentary short film, The Finding Cleveland Experience, is going to screen at the San Diego Chinese Historical Museum this August! This film uncovers the seldom told history of the early Chinese immigrants in the Mississippi Delta during the time of segregation and the Chinese Exclusion Act. The film takes the audience on an emotional journey filled with amazing discoveries as seen through the eyes of Charles Chiu and his family as they take a trip to Cleveland, Mississippi to visit the gravesite of Charles’ father, KC Lou. In less than 48 hours, Charles has many surprising encounters with the local townspeople, who help fill in some blanks about the father he never knew.
The Finding Cleveland Experience is an entertaining, uplifting, and unique educational program for the community. The event starts with musical performances by film producers, Larissa Lam and Baldwin Chiu (aka Only Won), then a screening of their documentary film. Popcorn and other refreshments will be available. The performance and screening will be followed by a discussion on the impact of the Chinese Exclusion Act on the Chiu family, the importance of Asian American stories and capped off with a time of audience Q&A.
The film has had several screenings in major cities including Los Angeles, San Francisco, New York, Boston and Washington, DC. The Finding Cleveland Experience has also won numerous awards, including winner of the Sacramento International Film Festival 2016, winner of the Oxford Film Festival 2016, and winner of the Asians on Film Festival (AOF) 2016. The Museum is pleased to share this unique and educational experience with museum members and the San Diego community.

In 21 years as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, SDCHM has transformed a historic, abandoned building downtown in what was once San Diego’s Chinatown into a state-of-the-art multi-site museum that plays a critical role in the cultural life of the San Diego community. Over the past twenty years, SDCHM has welcomed hundreds of thousands of visitors, collected thousands of ethnographic artifacts, and hosted hundreds of educational programs and exhibitions. SDCHM’s mission is to educate and inspire by preserving and celebrating the richness of Chinese history, art, culture and the contributions of Chinese Americans.
