Guest Artist: Dongsheng Gao

Special Event on Sunday, February 25:

The San Diego Chinese Historical Museum is thrilled to have guest artist Mr. Dongsheng Gao join us for one day only as he visits the West Coast from China. Mr. Gao is an expert in a very unique art form: snuff bottle painting.

South China Morning Post says Mr. Gao is “one of the few remaining masters of the art which dates back to the late Ming dynasty (1368-1644), and involves painting through the neck of the pocket-sized crystal and glass bottles with ultra-fine brushes to depict traditional Chinese scenes, landscapes or portraits.”

Mr. Gao will be doing a presentation on his specialized art form and displaying many of the bottles he’s painted over his 30+ year career. He will also have bottles for purchase, and will event be customizing a few.

A Brief Bio on Mr. Gao:

Mr. Dongsheng Gao was born in Beijing in 1964. He was a student of Master Liu Shouben, a master in snuff bottle painting. In 1999, he was awarded the honorary title of Chinese Arts and Crafts Master by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization.

Mr. Gao is a First Class Master of arts and crafts of Beijing, a board member of Beijing Arts and Crafts Association, a board member of Beijing folk artists association, a member of International Snuff Bottle Association and a member of Chinese Calligraphers and Painters Association.

His paintings are simple and elegant. His works have won the Gold Award of Beijing Gong Mei Cup, the Gold Prize of Chinese Folk Art Fair and the Gold Prize of China Antiques Expo. His works have been exhibited in China Art Museum, China Millennium Monument, Franklin Museum in the United States, Victoria Museum in Britain, Prehistoric Museum in Italy and most of his works have been accqired by collectors and museums.

He made portraits in snuff bottles for Queen Margrethe II of Denmark, former British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher, former President Zuma of South Africa, former Olympic Organizing Committee Chairman Mr. Samaranch and Mr. Rogge and General Zhang Xueliang.

Event Parking:

Two-hour metered parking ($1.25 per hour with a 2-hour limit) is available in front of the museum. There also independent parking lots nearby: 2nd and J Street, 6th and Island and 6th and Market (Park it on Market).
