The Flying Tigers – WWII Heroes of the US-China Alliance: The American Volunteer Group
During World War II, Japanese warplanes mercilessly bombarded Chinese cities. The capital Chungking and Kunming were almost bombarded daily as long as there was good weather. In an effort to combat the Japanese and to stop this mass killing of the Chinese civilians, a group of United States volunteer aviators led by General Claire Chennault established the 14th Aviation Wing in 1941. These volunteer aviators were such fierce fighters that the Chinese called them the Flying Tigers — even though the nose of their planes were painted as shark’s mouths.
